Manufactured in the Netherlands, the Duet™ is a multi-speed, tandem tricycle with electric-assist pedaling.
It combines the latest in adaptive cycle technology: the rear half of a bicycle frame attaches via quick-release hardware to a uniquely designed, stand-alone, wheelchair. When the two sections are connected the chair tilts slightly back, lifting the front guide wheels off the ground. This produces a relaxed, stable sitting position, and makes conversation easy between wheeler and pilot.
The wheelchair has good suspension, while its hybrid tires are excellent on gravel and dirt tracks. Brake drums control the chair’s two main wheels, while a back-pedal brake controls the rear cycling wheel.
Our trikes accommodate both a wheeler weighing up to 250 pounds and a pilot weighing up to 250 pounds. The electric-assist is useful both when pedaling for hours at a time – sometimes with heavy passengers – and when going up small hills. The electric-assist also means volunteers of all ages and athletic ability can train to be pilots.
The Duet™ tricycle is designed for safety. It has successfully passed both US and Canadian government regulations.
The pneumatic-assist steering means secure handling, while the three brakes ensure complete control at all times. The wheelchair’s low center of gravity provides superior weight distribution and overall stability. Trikes purchased by Portland Wheelers also have many additional safety features, including: a chest harness seat belt; head, arm, and (flip up) foot rests; thigh harnesses; calf and foot straps; and wheel safety covers.
Wheelers at all levels of functioning ride in comfort and security. They do not need to be physically mobile (ambulatory) nor have advanced cognitive skills. Because of this, the program is available to a wide range of people and body types, young and old alike.
